Climbing Mount Rinjani ranks among the toughest volcano treks in Southeast Asia. The summit stands 3,726 metres above Lombok, and every route crosses a crater rim near 2,640 metres before anyone even mentions the top. Moreover, the national park rewrote its rules twice since 2025, so advice from older blog posts no longer works.

This guide strips the climb back to what actually matters in 2026: verified trail status, official entrance fees, the eRinjani permit process, and the new safety requirements from Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR). We run treks from Senaru and Sembalun as Lombok Hiking Tour, and we update this page whenever the park office announces changes.

What Climbing Mount Rinjani Involves

Climbing Mount Rinjani means a multi-day trek inside a national park on Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Most trekkers choose a two-day crater rim hike or a two-to-three-day summit push, and both options require a licensed guide, a registered trekking organizer, and an eRinjani permit.

The park classifies these routes as difficulty level IV, so this is not a casual day walk. You gain roughly 2,600 metres of elevation, camp on the rim, and on summit programs wake at 2 a.m. for the final climb. In return, you get sunrise above the clouds, the Segara Anak crater lake far below, and clear views toward Bali’s Mount Agung.

Mount Rinjani Climbing Routes Compared

Six official routes enter the park, however Sembalun and Senaru handle almost every foreign trekker. Your choice shapes the scenery, the difficulty curve and the exit village, so compare them before you reserve a permit.

For a first summit attempt, we recommend Sembalun up, then either back down Sembalun or out through Senaru. Meanwhile, the Class 2 southern routes suit trekkers who value solitude over convenience.

Climbing Permits, Entrance Fees and eRinjani Booking

Every climber needs a permit booked through the official eRinjani app (our step-by-step booking guide explains the details), and foreign trekkers must reserve through a registered trekking organizer. Furthermore, entrance fees rose on 3 November 2025 under Forestry Ministry Regulation No. 17/2025, so check any quote you receive against the official rates below.

Route classForeignerIndonesian (weekday)Indonesian (weekend)
Class 1 – Sembalun, Senaru, ToreanRp 250,000Rp 50,000Rp 75,000
Class 2 – Timbanuh, Tetebatu, Aik BerikRp 200,000Rp 20,000Rp 30,000

Fees apply per person per day, therefore a three-day summit trek costs Rp 750,000 in park entry alone. The booking flow works like this:

  1. Download eRinjani and register with your passport details
  2. Choose your route, entry date and trek duration
  3. Check the daily quota — July to September sells out two to four weeks ahead
  4. Select your trekking organizer, guide and porters
  5. Declare items that could become waste under the zero waste policy
  6. Pay by BRIVA or QRIS within three hours
  7. Download the e-ticket and show the QR code at the gate

New Climbing Rules Every Rinjani Trekker Must Know

After a series of serious accidents in 2025, the Forestry Ministry and TNGR overhauled the climbing standard operating procedure in August 2025, then tightened it again in January 2026. These rules apply to every climber, regardless of fitness or budget.

  • Prior experience: the level IV classification bars first-time hikers, and rangers currently accept photo proof of earlier mountain climbs
  • Health check: a Surat Keterangan Sehat from an official clinic, arranged before your start date
  • Guide ratio: one guide per four trekkers since 1 January 2026, down from one per five
  • Porters: one porter per two foreign trekkers, carrying a maximum of 25 kg
  • Age rules: under-17s must travel with a guide, and 17-year-olds need written parental consent
  • Insurance: the park plans to fold accident cover with helicopter evacuation into future tickets, however final terms remain unpublished [perlu verifikasi]

Choose an operator that follows these ratios. It protects you, and it keeps the porters’ workload humane.

Climbing Season and Trail Status

The dry season from April to November offers the safest conditions, and the park closes completely every year from 1 January to the end of March. December rain turns the upper slopes slippery, so most operators pause programs then.

Here is the status check for late October 2026: forest fires burned around 1,100 hectares near Torean and Senaru in September, and TNGR confirmed full extinguishment on 28 October 2026. As a result, five routes — Sembalun, Senaru, Timbanuh, Tetebatu and Aik Berik — now operate normally, while Torean stays closed without a reopening date. Late in a long dry season, therefore, always recheck trail status the week you travel.

Fitness, Gear and Summit Day Preparation

Summit day starts between 2 and 3 a.m., because you must cross the loose volcanic scree before afternoon winds pick up. Train your legs and lungs for four to six weeks before departure — stair climbs with a loaded pack prepare you better than flat-road jogging.

Pack this checklist (the full Rinjani packing list covers every item):

  • Broken-in trekking boots with ankle support
  • Headlamp plus spare batteries
  • Windproof jacket, gloves and a beanie — temperatures drop near freezing on the rim
  • Two to three litres of water per climbing day
  • Trekking poles for the descent
  • A dust mask or buff against volcanic sand

Then ask your operator to arrange the health certificate in Senaru or Sembalun, because clinics there know exactly what rangers expect to see.

Book Your Rinjani Climb With a Licensed Local Operator

Lombok Hiking Tour handles the paperwork that slows most trekkers down: eRinjani permits, clinic health checks, certified guides who meet the 1:4 ratio, and porters who work within the official 25 kg load limit. See our 3D2N summit and lake trek and the other Mount Rinjani tour packages to match a program to your dates. Send your dates through WhatsApp +62-857-3920-4862 or email indomountour@gmail.com, and we will confirm route availability against the current park quotas.
