The Lombok Mount Rinjani hike ranks among Southeast Asia’s toughest volcano treks. It climbs to 3,726 metres on Lombok island, Indonesia, inside Gunung Rinjani National Park. Most trekkers finish in two to four days, and every route requires a licensed guide.
We have run treks from Senaru and Sembalun for over 20 years at Lombok Hiking Tour. Therefore, every number below comes from our own programs and the current park rules. Read this page first, then book with confidence.
What the Lombok Mount Rinjani Hike Involves
The Lombok Mount Rinjani hike is a multi-day volcano trek on Lombok island, Indonesia. You climb from village gates at 601 to 1,156 metres up to a crater rim above 2,600 metres. Summit programs then push for the 3,726-metre peak before sunrise. Tents, cooked meals and hot springs fill the nights between.
Gunung Rinjani National Park manages every trail and rates the whole mountain at difficulty level IV. Consequently, this hike sits far above a casual island walk. Moreover, the trail network now centres on two gates: Senaru in the north and Sembalun in the east. Torean stays closed after the September 2026 fires, so we plan every program around the two open gates.
Lombok Mount Rinjani Hike Routes and Duration
Most Lombok Mount Rinjani hike plans need two to four days. The 2D1N programs cover either the Senaru crater rim or the summit. The 3D2N traverse then adds Segara Anak lake and its hot springs. Meanwhile, the 4D3N version splits the hardest day, so tired legs recover faster.
| Program | Route | Days | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2D1N crater rim | Senaru up and down | 2 | Rainforest climb, sunrise at the 2,641-metre rim |
| 2D1N summit | Sembalun up and down | 2 | Summit sunrise, one long descent |
| 3D2N summit and lake | Sembalun in, Senaru out | 3 | Summit, Segara Anak lake, hot springs |
| 4D3N summit and lake | Sembalun in, Senaru out | 4 | Slower pace, lakeside camping |
Day one from Sembalun covers ten kilometres across open savanna in seven to eight hours. The summit push then adds five kilometres: about three hours up and two hours down through loose scree. As a result, day two of the 3D2N program runs ten to twelve hours in total. Our Mount Rinjani trekking itinerary breaks each day into hourly detail.
Mount Rinjani Hike Difficulty and Elevation Gain
The Mount Rinjani hike difficulty sits at level IV, so the park bars complete first-time hikers. From Sembalun village at 1,156 metres, you gain roughly 2,570 metres to the summit. The final section crosses loose volcanic scree, where two steps forward often slide one back. You therefore need proven mountain fitness, not just enthusiasm.
Our own difficulty review counts roughly one in four trekkers reaching the summit, and cold, wind and exhaustion cause most turnarounds. However, the rim remains a worthy goal when the summit refuses. Prepare with these steps:
- Walk steep uphill trails weekly in the two months before departure.
- Bring trekking poles, because they save your knees on every descent.
- Choose the 4D3N program when recovery speed worries you.

Mount Rinjani Hike Cost in 2026
A Lombok Mount Rinjani hike costs Rp 750,000 per foreign trekker in park entry fees for three days. ANTARA confirmed that tariff after the 2025 increase. Tour packages then add guides, porters, tents, meals and hotel transfers on top. Compare packages on their inclusions first, because a cheap quote often hides rented gear.
- Park entry: Rp 750,000 per person for three days on a Class 1 route
- Health certificate: a local clinic near the gates issues it for a small fee
- eRinjani permit: you book it online before arrival
- Package rate: covers guide, porters, tent, meals, transfers and a hotel night before the trek
Our Mount Rinjani hike tour price page lists current package rates, so check it before you budget.
Mount Rinjani Hike Rules – Guides, Permits and Safety
You cannot do the Lombok Mount Rinjani hike without a guide. Since January 2026, one certified guide leads at most four trekkers, and every climber registers through the eRinjani permit system. A health certificate from a local clinic completes the file. Solo trekking therefore stays off the table on this level IV mountain.
These rules protect trekkers, and guides set the turnaround times on summit day. You should accept their calls without argument, because weather shifts fast above 3,000 metres. Furthermore, Rinjani remains an active volcano, and rangers close trails whenever activity rises. The Forestry Ministry rules explain the guide ratio in detail. The official TNGR tariff page lists current entry fees.
Best Time for the Mount Rinjani Hike
The best window for a Lombok Mount Rinjani hike runs from April to June and September to early November. Trails stay dry, and daily quotas leave more room than in peak season. July and August bring the biggest crowds, so permits sell out two to four weeks ahead. The park then closes completely from 1 January to 31 March.
- April–June: green savanna and quieter trails
- July–August: guaranteed dry weather, highest demand
- September–early November: shoulder season with stable trails
- December: rain risk rises and trails turn slick
- January–March: annual park closure
