7 Mountains in Indonesia That Will Be Closed for Climbing in Early 2025, Including Climb Mount Rinjani On Lombok Island
Unhappy news has come for climbers. The reason is, a number of national parks and mountain offices in Indonesia have announced the temporary closure of climbing routes.
The reasons for the closure vary, ranging from extreme weather, ecosystem recovery, and other natural conditions. Wow, I wonder which mountains are scheduled to close in early 2025? 1.Mount Rinjani
Climb Mount Rinjani
Climb To Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, will be closed for three months, from January 1, 2025 to April 2, 2025. This closure was announced via the Instagram account @btn_gn_rinjani on December 20, 2024. In the statement,
there are six routes that will be closed,
namely:
1.Mount Rinjani Trekking Senaru Crater Rim’ Senaru Hiking Tour Route in North Lombok,
2.Rinjani Trekking Torean Route in North Lombok,
3.Mount Rinjani Hike Sembalun Route in East Lombok,
4.Rinjani Trekking Timbanuh Hiking Tour Route in East Lombok,
5.Climb Mount Rinjani Tetebatu Hiking Tour Route in East Lombok
6.Climb Mount Rinjani Aik Berik Hiking Tour Route in Central Lombok.
The reason for the closure is because there is the potential for hydrometeorological disasters, such as heavy rain, strong winds that can occur suddenly and locally in several areas, floods, landslides, and tornadoes.
2.Mount Tambora
Another mountain in West Nusa Tenggara that is also closed to all tourism and climbing activities is Mount Tambora. The closure will be carried out starting January 2, 2025 until an undetermined time limit. This was conveyed through a press release uploaded to the official account @btn_tambora_official on December 30, 2024. The statement also explained the reasons for the closure of Mount Tambora, namely the occurrence of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. This has the potential for storms during the beginning of the year. This closure also provides an opportunity for the Tambora National Park ecosystem to recover from the impact of tourism activities.
 3.Mount Semeru
Mount Semeru in East Java was temporarily closed from 2-19 January 2025. Initially, the closure was scheduled to last until 16 January 2025, but was extended three days later, to 19 January 2025. The closure was due to the extreme weather that often occurred in early 2025. The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park took this step as an effort to avoid unwanted incidents, as well as for the safety and security of all mountaineers in the Mount Semeru area.
4.Mount Gede Pangrango
Due to extreme weather in the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park area, Cianjur, West Java, climbing activities in the area are temporarily closed to the public from December 25, 2024 to March 31, 2025. In addition to weather factors, this closure is also carried out in order to restore the ecosystem. Prospective climbers are expected to comply with this rule for the safety of all and can return to climbing the mountain at the specified time.
5.Mount Halimun Salak
Another mountain in West Java that also temporarily closed its hiking trails is Mount Halimun Salak, Sukabumi. This will be done starting December 7, 2024 until an undetermined time. Information about the closure of Mount Halimun Salak was officially announced via the Instagram account @btn_gn_halimunsalak. The reason for the closure is due to extreme weather conditions and the restoration of the forest ecosystem on the hiking trails. The hiking trails or gates that are closed include Cidahu, Pasir Reungit, Cimalati, and Ajisaka.
6.Mount Merbabu
Compared to other mountains, Mount Merbabu has closed earlier, starting from October 31, 2024 until an undetermined time limit. This announcement was made via the official Instagram @btn_gn_merbabu. The reasons are for the restoration of the forest ecosystem and the transition period for the implementation of the latest entrance fees. Other considerations are extreme weather and high rainfall, as well as the safety of all climbers or visitors there.
7.Mount Prau
Mount Prau in Wonosobo, Central Java. The closure will be carried out from January 12, 2025 to Monday, March 31, 2025. This announcement was made via the official Instagram account @prau_mountain. The closure was carried out to anticipate bad weather, reforestation, and repair of paths at each basecamp. The hiking trail will be reopened on April 1, 2025. Hopefully, this closure will make the recovery efforts run smoothly. When it’s time to open, you can go there right away!
